My wife and I love visiting this beach in Tauranga. It's beautiful at any time of day. Just be ready for a decent hike to the top, but the hike is also stunning with New Zealand's flora and fauna.

Mount Maunganui is a bustling suburb of Tauranga, situated on a peninsula to the northeast of the city center. It was its own town until the Tauranga Harbour Bridge was completed in 1988, connecting it to Tauranga's central business district. The area is home to a large lava dome, formed millions of years ago by the upwelling of rhyolite lava. Known officially as Mauao in Māori, it is commonly referred to as The Mount in New Zealand. According to the New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Maunganui translates to "large mountain."

There is ample parking available along the beach, which features well-maintained white sand and various swimming and surfing areas. Lifeguards are on duty, reminding visitors to "swim between the flags" for safety. Nearby, there is an island with a walking track and fishing spots. Many children can be seen learning to surf and enjoying themselves. Additionally, there is a wide selection of food and drinks available in the vicinity.
