I was fortunate enough to hike the Mulawai trail to Waimanu Valley and camp for a few nights. There are six campsites along the mile-wide beach, and we had the entire place to ourselves the whole time. The only downside was the helicopters flying over every 30 minutes throughout the day. The farthest campsite is the best, as it's closest to the fresh water stream. We bushwhacked our way to a huge waterfall. We felt blessed to have the opportunity to enjoy this experience! Pack light, as the hike out is quite challenging with a lot of elevation in the heat.

This was the most challenging hike I've ever undertaken, but it was absolutely worth it. The place is incredible and magical. The beach stretches on for miles, and since it's so difficult to reach, you'll likely have it all to yourself.

In September 2021, I embarked on a solo hike to Waimanu. The initial part of the hike was quite challenging, especially since I wasn't fully prepared—I didn't have a sleeping bag or tent. Along the way, I had to cross two rivers, with the second one near the Waimanu campsite being about 3 feet deep, so be ready to get wet. The scenery was absolutely stunning. Witnessing the sunset and sunrise felt like a spiritual experience. I would definitely do this hike again. Just a heads-up, the outhouse was swarming with bugs, so be prepared for that.

The ultimate hiking and camping adventure! This secluded valley boasts stunning tropical forest views and a campsite right by the beach. Each of the nine campsites features its own wall and fireplace made from black stones, with plenty of firewood scattered around. Surrounded by coconut trees, you might even find a fresh coconut on the ground or be able to pick one yourself! The toilets are surprisingly clean, though there are no showers. For a refreshing dip, you can always jump into the river or the ocean. If you plan to visit, remember that the valley experiences frequent rain showers (at least 2-3 times a day), so keeping your belongings dry can be quite a challenge.

The hike in is not to be underestimated, but the trail serves as an excellent example of ancient Hawaiian road (trail) construction over otherwise impassable terrain. Once you reach the valley, it transforms into a magical place imbued with a unique kind of enchantment that's hard to find elsewhere. My only gripe is the incessant stream of helicopters passing through the valley, but I guess that's the only way most people can witness this stunning location. Definitely add this to your bucket list. When it comes to hikes and camping in Hawaii, it ranks just below Kalalau.
